RINTY MONAGHAN

FLUGEL HORN

Hugh (Rinty) Monaghan was 14 years old when he joined his first band - Preston Links Silver Band, in East Lothian.

One year later he enlisted in the Royal Military School of Music in London and studied there for a year before joining the Royal Scots Band where he played French Horn for the next 6 years.

During his time with the Royal Scots, Rinty served in the Korean War and travelled the world, visiting various foreign lands with the band.

In 1957 Rinty left the army and came back to Scotland.   It was at this point that he first became involved with Penicuik Silver Band, initially playing cornet then accepting a one-year post as Band Conductor.

For the next forty years Rinty played with the MacTaggart Scott Loanhead Band where he played Principal Cornet for over thirty-six of those years.

Rinty returned to Penicuik Silver Band in 2002 and is a valued and loved member of our band.   He recently became our Flugel Horn player and currently holds the job title of "Mr Fix It"!

In addition to his striking resemblance to Father Christmas, the band beleves that Rinty too has a work-shop full of helpers that assist him in mending and repairing any instrument, stand or mute holder that requires his loving attention.

Rinty is a fun-loving and friendly member of the band, with many jokes and stories to tell.

One of the many interesting facts about Rinty is that he was one of Her Majesty's State Trumpeters for over 33 years, during which for ten of those years he was Senior State Trumpeter.

Rinty continues to enjoy playing music and in 1998 was presented with his 50 years medal for Services to Brass Bands.
